When technique is not the whole answer

You may already have reached the edge of the familiar map.

The next step is not necessarily another technique. It may be a better way to recognise what is creating and maintaining the client’s experience.

01

The insight does not become action

Your client understands the pattern, but still repeats it when the pressure returns.

02

The intervention creates only a temporary shift

The state changes in the session, but the person’s underlying way of making meaning does not.

03

The same method produces different results

Two clients present with a similar problem, yet they are constructing it in fundamentally different ways.

One practical distinction

CDT develops what NLP began.

It does not ask you to discard useful NLP knowledge. It adds the adult-development perspective needed to understand how the person is organising experience in the moment.

“I know exactly what I should do. I just don’t do it.”
An NLP-informed lens may explore

Language, state, strategy and pattern

What is the person saying, feeling or doing—and what intervention might help create a different response?

CDT adds another question

How are awareness, identity and choice being constructed?

What can this person currently notice? What remains outside awareness? How is their present construction making one response more available than another?

The difference matters: two people can use the same words while requiring very different developmental conversations.
